GUWAHATI – Following a wave of persistent protests by Post Graduate (PG) students, the Gauhati University (GU) administration has officially buckled, granting several key concessions regarding examination schedules and hostel facilities. The decision comes after students laid siege to the administrative block, demanding relief from what they termed an "unreasonable" academic calendar.
The Core Demands
The protests, led by the Gauhati University Post Graduate Students' Union (GUPGSU), primarily targeted the condensed timeline of the upcoming semester examinations. Students argued that the syllabus remained incomplete due to recent holidays and administrative delays, making the original exam dates impossible to meet.
Key issues raised during the agitation included:
Examination Gaps: Lack of sufficient preparation time between papers.
Syllabus Completion: Significant portions of the curriculum in several departments had not yet been covered.
Hostel Infrastructure: Recurring issues with water supply and meal quality in the campus hostels.
The University’s Response
Following a high-level meeting between the University Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and student representatives on Wednesday, the administration issued a formal notification detailing the concessions:
Rescheduled Exams: The semester examinations, originally slated to begin earlier, have been pushed back by 10 days to allow students more time for revision.
Preparatory Breaks: The university has guaranteed a minimum gap of two days between major papers to ease the academic pressure.
Special Classes: Departments with incomplete syllabi have been directed to hold extra classes over the next two weeks to ensure all topics are covered before the exams.
Hostel Reforms: An immediate budget has been cleared for the repair of water filtration systems in three major hostels, with a committee formed to monitor the quality of food served in the mess.
"A Win for the Student Community"
Speaking to the media after the announcement, a spokesperson for the GUPGSU called the move a "moral victory."
"We did not want to disrupt the academic atmosphere, but the administration left us with no choice. We are pleased that the university has finally acknowledged the genuine hardships faced by the PG students," the union representative stated.
While the campus has returned to a state of normalcy, the student union has warned that they will resume their agitation if the promised hostel repairs are not initiated within the week.
