Guwahati: Union Minister of State and BJP leader Pabitra Margherita has strongly rejected the claims made by the Indian National Congress regarding the nomination of Gaurav Gogoi as group leader of the India–Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Responding to Congress leaders who questioned that if Gogoi had alleged links to Pakistan, why he was nominated to head a parliamentary friendship group, Margherita termed the argument “baseless and politically motivated.”

‘Nomination Is a Routine Parliamentary Process’

Margherita clarified that Parliamentary Friendship Groups are formed under the framework of the Lok Sabha to strengthen bilateral ties with friendly nations such as the Philippines. He emphasized that such nominations are procedural and do not serve as endorsements of an individual’s innocence or guilt.

“Gaurav Gogoi continues to be a sitting Member of Parliament. As long as he holds that position, he is entitled to discharge his parliamentary responsibilities,” Margherita stated.

Investigation Still Underway

Addressing the controversy surrounding allegations previously raised by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Margherita said the matter remains under investigation. He stressed that the legal process must be allowed to run its course.

“The investigation is ongoing. If any wrongdoing is established and he is found guilty by a competent authority or court of law, appropriate action will be taken. Until then, assumptions and political narratives should not override due process,” he asserted.

Congress Argument ‘Politically Motivated’

Margherita further accused Congress of attempting to politicize a standard parliamentary procedure. According to him, the nomination to the friendship group does not grant immunity nor does it provide a “clean chit” to anyone facing allegations.

He maintained that parliamentary diplomacy and domestic investigations operate independently, and conflating the two is misleading.

The development continues to stir political debate in Assam, with both sides standing firm on their positions. However, Margherita reiterated that the rule of law will prevail and any final determination will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
