In a major boost to India’s defence infrastructure in the Northeast, the Indian Air Force has inaugurated the Moran Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Assam. Located in Moran, this state-of-the-art highway-based airstrip marks a significant milestone as Northeast India’s first strategic dual-use runway built on a national highway.

A Strategic Asset in a Sensitive Region

The Moran ELF has been developed keeping in mind the region’s strategic importance. Situated relatively close to India’s international borders, the facility enhances operational preparedness in case of emergencies, particularly during heightened security situations or natural disasters.

Designed as an alternate landing site, the runway can be used if conventional airbases such as Dibrugarh Airport or Chabua Air Force Station become unavailable due to operational constraints or hostile action.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities
  • Length: 4.2 kilometres

  • Type: Reinforced dual-use highway airstrip

  • Cost: Approximately ₹100 crore

  • Aircraft Capacity:

    • Fighter jets up to 40 tonnes

    • Transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes

The reinforced design ensures that the runway can withstand the weight and operational demands of heavy military aircraft while continuing to function as a regular highway when not in use for defence operations.

Boost to Defence Readiness and Rapid Deployment

The Moran ELF significantly enhances India’s rapid deployment capability in the Northeast. In the event of an attack on primary airbases or infrastructure, fighter jets and transport aircraft can quickly operate from this alternate strip, ensuring continuity of air operations.

Beyond military applications, the facility also strengthens disaster response mechanisms. Assam and the broader Northeast region are prone to floods and other natural calamities. The availability of a strategic landing strip improves the speed of humanitarian assistance, evacuation operations, and logistical support during emergencies.

A Step Toward Modern Defence Infrastructure

Highway-based emergency landing facilities are part of India’s broader effort to modernise defence infrastructure and create redundancy in air operations. The Moran ELF demonstrates the government’s focus on strengthening strategic depth and operational flexibility in border regions.

With its successful inauguration, the Moran Emergency Landing Facility stands as a symbol of enhanced preparedness, improved connectivity, and stronger national security in Northeast India.
