HYDERABAD – Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have officially appointed Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan as their captain for the start of the IPL 2026 season. The move comes as regular skipper Pat Cummins continues to recover from a persistent lower-back injury.

The franchise also confirmed a significant new role for young sensation Abhishek Sharma, who has been named the team’s vice-captain.

Leadership Transition

The announcement, made via the team’s official social media channels on Wednesday, March 18, clarified that Kishan will hold the reins on an interim basis.

"Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering from injury. Until he recovers, Ishan Kishan will be the Captain and Abhishek Sharma will be the Vice-Captain," the franchise stated.

Cummins has been struggling with a lumbar stress issue that previously ruled him out of Australia’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign and limited his participation in the recent Ashes series. While he is expected to join the SRH camp in Hyderabad by March 23, there is currently no confirmed timeline for his return to the playing XI.

Why Ishan Kishan?

Kishan’s appointment is backed by a stellar run of form and growing leadership credentials:

  • T20 World Cup Heroics: Kishan was instrumental in India’s recent T20 World Cup title defense, finishing as the team’s second-highest run-scorer with 317 runs (including a crucial fifty in the final against New Zealand).

  • Domestic Success: Earlier this season, he led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, finishing as the tournament's leading run-getter.

  • IPL Pedigree: Since being acquired by SRH for ₹11.25 crore (some reports suggest ₹14.5 crore following performance bonuses) in the 2025 auction, Kishan has become a cornerstone of the batting lineup, famously smashing a century on his debut for the franchise.

Abhishek Sharma’s New Role

Abhishek Sharma, currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I Batting Rankings, takes on his first official leadership role in the IPL. Despite a mixed T20 World Cup, Abhishek silenced critics with a whirlwind 52 off 21 balls in the final. His partnership with Kishan at the top of the order—and now in the leadership group—is expected to define SRH's aggressive "Orange Army" philosophy this year.

The Road Ahead

This leadership shift means that for the first time in the league's history, all 10 IPL franchises will likely be led by Indian captains at the start of the season.

SRH is scheduled to open their IPL 2026 campaign against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28.
