GUWAHATI/BARPETA – In a swift operation, the Assam Police have arrested three suspected members of a burglary gang in Barpeta district in connection with a major theft reported from the Lokhra Chariali area of Guwahati.

The Operation

The arrests were made following a search operation in Bhella, Barpeta, based on leads from a burglary case filed at Lokhra Chariali. The suspects were intercepted during a raid, leading to the recovery of stolen goods and the vehicle used in the commission of the crime.

Recovered Items

The police successfully seized the following items from the possession of the accused:

  • Brassware: Eight brass plates (approx. 4.5 kg) and six brass bowls (approx. 1.5 kg).

  • Currency: ₹10,000 in cash.

  • Vehicle: A four-wheeler allegedly used by the gang to transport stolen goods and flee the city.

Background of the Case

The victim, a shop owner in Lokhra Chariali, had reported that unknown miscreants had broken multiple locks of his establishment. According to the police, this was not an isolated incident; the same shop had been targeted previously, with several brass utensils stolen in earlier break-ins.

Investigation Underway

Authorities believe the arrested individuals may be part of a larger interstate or inter-district gang targeting commercial establishments in Guwahati. "Legal action has been initiated, and an investigation is underway to ascertain if they are involved in other pending burglary cases in the city," a police official stated.

The recovery of the brass items and the vehicle is being seen as a significant breakthrough in curbing the recent spike in shop burglaries in the Lokhra and Garchuk areas.
